Volunteer Weekend Dog Companion

Weekend Companion Homes take Paragon Dogs in advanced training on weekends (Thursday afternoon through Monday morning) which provides our service dogs with loving homes and real-world experiences that are key to their success in their future placement and work. JOY FILLED BENEFITS: Learn new skills such as best practices in positive dog training, advocating for a puppy-in-training, and communicating with the general public. Join a community of folks who are passionate about dogs and animal welfare. Participate in the “Passing of the Leash” ceremony. Lots of wagging tails and dog snuggles. Puppy breath. RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide love, support, safety, socialization, and maintain basic training for a dog in advanced training for 3-6 months. Pick up their dog from Paragon on Thursday afternoon and return the dog Monday morning. Maintain the puppy basic skills (good house manners, loose leash walking, etc) and appropriate behavior using Paragon’s cues and techniques. Promote confidence in the dog and an eagerness to work through positive reinforcement. Follow Paragon’s procedures and guidelines. Attend (virtual and/or in-person) puppy classes or outings once a month. Have fun with and enjoy your Paragon dog! PARAGON RESPONSIBILITIES: Dog food, dog equipment (leash, collar, crate, vest), and preventatives are provided by Paragon. All routine veterinary care is covered. Support and consistent communication with knowledgeable staff to answer questions, troubleshoot, and problem-solve any areas of concern in person, over the phone, or by email. Monthly training updates as the dog is going through advanced training. Relevant Paragon status updates - medical assessments, placements, career paths, etc.
